Grizzly Bear Population:
In December, government wildlife officials apparently had good news about grizzly bears: There are 400 to 500 grizzlies in the 9,200 square mile area around Yellowstone National Park, double the 1988 population, they said. That means that grizzlies in that area could soon be taken off the endangered-species list and be downgraded to threatened species. Not everyone is so ready, however. Wildlife activists dispute those population estimates, and say the bears should remain on the endangered list. That, in fact, may happen regardless of how many bears there actually are. Numerous government and Native American agencies have to agree on a new plan to monitor the bears and their habitat before any change can occur.
